EXPLORE-GASMS…

Sex educator Alix Fox and Dr. Adam Kay discuss the different types of female climax that are theoretically possible – and ways to play that might help you experience them

Ever heard of a ‘blended orgasm’? No, it’s nothing to do with smoothies!

It’s one of several separate ‘styles’ of orgasm that some specialists believe women can enjoy. Each is achieved by stimulating distinct areas of the body in particular ways, and lots of ladies claim that the different types of climax feel different too.

“The medical community are still examining the neural pathways involved in orgasm, but we believe that stimulation in different bodily zones could cause different types of signals to be sent to the brain,” Dr. Adam Kay explains

“Whether this results in physically different types of ‘grand finale’ is controversial, though,” he continues. “It’s a cause of mass debate - as it were.

What we do know for sure is that there’s absolutely no harm in investigating each type of orgasm style for yourself, to see if you can uncover the best ways to achieve orgasm. Whatever may or may not be taking place scientifically, if it feels good to you, then that’s a good thing.

Put your lab coat on – it’s time to get experimental…

EXPLORE: CLITORAL ORGASMS

What’s the theory?

The clitoris is the classic ‘hot spot’ to tease and tickle if you’re after an orgasm. In fact, some studies suggest that a huge 94% of women require clitoral stimulation to reach climax*.

What’s the science?

“It might look small, and half the country’s men might only have the vaguest idea where it is, but the clitoris is crucial to female sexual pleasure – it has over 8,000 nerve endings, twice that of your common or garden penis,” says Dr. Kay. “And you might be surprised to hear that the average clitoris is around 9 centimeters in length – although all but a few millimeters run deep below the surface of the body, like a sexy iceberg.”

What can I try doing to see if this style makes me smile?

  • The clitoris is the precise place Durex Intense Orgasmic gel is designed to work its magic! Start by massaging in just 2-3 drops, and add more if you need to. You should notice waves of cooling, tingling or warming sensations that make strokes from fingers, toys, or the rubbing of his body against yours feel all the more intense.
  • It’s worth knowing that plenty of women find direct contact to the clitoris feels so "full-on" that it’s too much to handle, and can almost be painful. Touching over the top of the clitoral hood can be more comfy.
  • Vibrations against the clit can provide the va-va-voom needed to increase blood flow to the genitals and wake up those thousands of nerve endings, which can lead to an awesome orgasm. Try holding or moving a Durex Intense Bullet vibrator against the area, or get him to wear a Durex Pleasure Ring, positioned on top of his penis so it presses on your clitoris while he’s inside you.

EXPLORE: G-SPOT ORGASMS

What’s the theory?

The g-spot is supposedly located 1-2 inches inside the vagina, on the front wall (towards your bellybutton, not your spine). Some women report they have a patch of tissue there about the size of a milk bottle lid, that feels rougher or puffier than the surrounding flesh, especially when they’re turned on.

Playing with this zone can feel wonderful, and some swear it can provoke an orgasm. A minority of women even report that stimulating the g-spot can prompt ‘female ejaculation’: a sudden gushing or squirting of liquid from the vaginal area.

Certain sexologists believe rubbing this spot might actually stimulate an internal part of the clitoris, as mentioned by Dr. Kay above.

What’s the science?

According to Dr. Kay, “If you can’t find your G spot – don’t panic, as it might not exist: a number of studies have cast doubt on it being a true anatomic structure. No-one disputes that this area of the vagina can be very sensitive for some women, but people are arranged quite differently inside, and feel things differently, so experiment, and enjoy whatever works for you without stressing about what’s ‘normal’.”

As for female ejaculation, he says: “Doctors disagree as to what the liquid actually is that can trickle or gush from women if they ejaculate: some think it’s a fluid produced by a structure called the Skene glands; some think it’s simply urine; others claim it’s a mixture.”

We say: does it really matter if it feels fantastic?

What can I try doing to see if this style makes me smile?

  • The g-spot can be awkward to reach on your own. Try exploring with a long vibrator such as the Durex Ultimate Pleasure , or ask your partner to use their fingers to rub the area in circular motions, or perform a repeated ‘come hither’ stroking motion.
  • During intercourse, the ‘doggy style’ position can help target the g-spot, especially if the woman keeps her head up but arches her back down, pushing her belly towards the floor.
  • Pressing down on your pubic mound – the plump, rounded area where your pubic hair starts to grow – can help to put pressure on the g-spot from the outside while you have a toy or penis inside.

EXPLORE: BLENDED ORGASMS

What’s the theory?

A blended orgasm can result from a simultaneous mixture of clitoral and g-spot stimulation. For this type of orgasm, more is more!

What’s the science?

It’s a blend of what Dr. Kay has already said! The idea is to stimulate as many nerves as possible, for an orgasm that feels extra heightened and ‘big’.

What can I try doing to see if this style makes me smile?

During partnered sex, try a woman-on-top position that gives him full access to your clitoris. He can tease you there with his fingers or a vibe, while you lean backwards to angle his penis towards the front wall of your vagina.

EXPLORE MULTIPLE ORGASMS

What’s the theory?

Let’s be honest: if you’re a woman struggling to climax during sex - or struggling to climax at all - hearing that some lucky females can have several Big Os in a row can be disheartening. This isn’t immediately achievable for everyone, so don’t feel down if you’re yet to experience a domino rally of orgasms.

Keep an open mind though, because it is 100% possible for women to enjoy a sequence of climaxes in short succession. It is the biological advantage over men that allows this to happen.

What’s the science?

“Men have evolution to blame for multiple orgasms being a bit of a rarity,” explains Dr. Kay. “It takes time for new sperm to form after a guy’s ejaculated, so the male body produces a hormone called prolactin, which gives men a lock-out period before they can climax again. This means they don’t shoot blanks and kill off the species! Women don’t produce nearly as much prolactin, so their ‘refractory period’ – the time they need between orgasms – is virtually nil.”

What can I try doing to see if this style makes me smile?

  • If you’re planning to attempt a long sex or self-pleasure session, keep the lube handy to avoid soreness or chafing! Water-based varieties like Durex Play Feel suit all skin types.
  • Practicing kegel exercises can help put multiple moan-ments on the menu, but multi-orgasmic women often say that the key to unlocking more than one climax is about attitude. Once you’ve had your first orgasm, don’t switch off mentally and assume it’s game over and time to roll over and snooze; try to stay present, and keep the sense of arousal flowing. You need to believe to achieve!
  • It’s usual for your genitals to feel hyper-sensitive after coming, and you may not want to be touched there straight away. Play with your breasts or kiss for a while to keep things feeling erotic, then head down south again to try for Round 2 when it’s more manageable.
